The enchanting town of Elmina lies on a narrow finger of land between the Atlantic Ocean and Benya Lagoon. Here, the air is salty and the architecture is a charming mix of colonial remnants, elderly posubans (shrines) and an imposing historical legacy in the shape of St George's Castle.

When to visit

Elmina has a tropical climate and is warm year-round. During the dry season (Dec–Mar), the harmattan wind blows dry air from the Sahara Desert, making it hot but not very humid. The rest of the year sees plenty of rain, especially Apr–Jul and Sep–Oct. The Bakatue Festival (Jul) celebrates the founding of the town and the start of the fishing season with regattas and the ceremonial casting of a net.
